About Bosch

The Conjurer

1450-1516. Oil on oak panel.

Upon first viewing, The Conjurer sets itself apart from Bosch's other works. Instead of focusing on religion through fantasical content, Bosch depicted the naivety of mankind through the pickpocketing magician's assistant. Historians believe this piece was inspired by the performers and peddlers of Bosch's hometown during the late 15th century. Interestingly, there are five copies of this painting with the most reliable one being held at Saint-Germane-en-Laye commune in France.
