About Bosch

The Harrowing of Hell

1540-1560. Oil on panel. 59.4 x 81.0cm.

This painting depicts Christ entering the horrors of Hell. The story this painting depicts can be found in the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus. Interestingly, this painting is believed to be a reproduction of Bosch's four smaller paintings of the same subject. In the mid sixteenth century, Bosch's work was in high demand—prompting the creation of various imitations such as this one. However, the replicas are considered inferior to the accepted works of Bosch in all aspects.

This painting can be found in the Royal Collection Trust. For more information, visit Royal Collection Trust.
