Bosch is estimated to have been born in 1450 in 's-Hertogenbosch, the capital of the Dutch province of Brabant in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, little is known about Bosch's life or personality as there are no written documents saved—only references from municipal records of his hometown. It is known painting was a multigenerational affair for Bosch's family as there is evidence of works produced by his grandfather, Jan van Aken. It is also believed Bosch was taught to paint by either his father or one of his painter uncles. Regardless, Bosch grew to become a well-known artist during his time and recieved commissions from around the world. He was a known member of the Brotherhood of Our Lady, an arch-conservative religious group consisting of people from across Europe. Bosch passed in 1516 in the town of Oirschot with his wife Aleyt Goyaerts van den Meerveen.
